Cherbourg – Sailing Directions
Precautions / Regulations / Facilities.
Maintain Listening Watch on approach (Ship / Jobourg CG to Ship) Ch 13 and within Cherbourg Port Chentreyne on Ch 09.
Navigation: See “Tidal Streams” and keep careful watch to avoid commercial / naval shipping and fish farms(?) located with harbour limits.
Depths: The wider and inner harbour is safe to enter at all states of tide. The West Passage is the deepest and wider that the Eastern entrance, which is not used as frequently, although it is safe providing the track is kept outside of dangers – clearly marked by buoys.
Tidal Streams: Keep offshore 2.5M until making direct track for harbour entrance. Large entrance to harbour but with strong streams outside of harbour entrance and in Grande Rade (Wider Harbour). Outside harbour streams can run at up to 4 knots East / West & West / East.
Winds: The Harbour is a port of refuge and is safe to enter in all weathers.
Ferries / Naval / Commercial shipping: Commercial shipping / ferries and Naval vessels have priority of way at all times.
Port Milltaire: Prohibited area within Port Milltaire, which cannot be entered without prior permission.
Speed Limits: Wider Harbour 14 knots otherwise 8 knots in the inner harbour and 3 knots in Port Chantereyne marina.

Marina Access: Port Chantereyne marina can be accessed at all times and states of tide.

Arrival procedures: In season Port Chantereyne marina staff will normally greet and direct visiting craft from their small harbour launch. When staff are not on water to direct visiting yachts, go to any available visitors berth.
Anchoring: Small craft permitted to anchor North of marina breakwater but keeping clear of the military port limits. Min. depth 2.3m.
Fuel: Diesel and petrol is available at the pumps next to the marina reception near pontoon J. Ask at marina reception during normal working hours for assistance or 24/7 with credit card. See: “VHF communications” & “Useful Telephone Contacts”.
